The Midwest Poultry Consortium (MPC) plays a leading role in advancing research by securing critical funding and support for poultry research programs: the current Laying Hen & Turkey Research Program (LHTRP) and the former Midwest Poultry Research Program (MPRP). Together, these programs exemplify MPC's long-standing commitment to strengthening poultry research, innovation, and workforce development for the poultry industry.

Laying Hen & Turkey Research Program (LHTRP)
The LHTRP is the current poultry research program administered through the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). MPC led the effort to secure federal authorization for the program in 2018, culminating in its first congressional appropriation in 2023. Since then, MPC has successfully secured $2.5 million for LHTRP and continues to champion sustained investment through ongoing advocacy efforts. This funding helps ensure poultry-focused research remains active on university campuses while creating valuable hands-on research opportunities for students, helping develop the next generation of industry professionals and researchers.
Midwest Poultry Research Program (MPRP)
The MPRP was a highly successful public-private partnership addressing priority research needs within the poultry industry. Founded in 2001, MPRP focused on improving the efficiency and sustainability of poultry production through integrated, collaborative research and effective technology transfer. MPRP received an initial federal appropriation of $400,000 and, through leveraged matching funds, supported more than $6 million in poultry research between 2002 and 2010. The program fostered collaboration among universities, researchers, and industry partners, generating impactful research that advanced poultry production practices and strengthened the industry.
